Beyond Retro

I bought this snazzy new (well, vintage) dress at the Beyond Retro warehouse whilst on holiday in Brighton earlier this week. I wanted a nice souvenir to remind me of the holiday, and this will now forever be my 'Brighton Dress'. I wore it out today in my slightly more conservatively-dressed town and got a fair few surprised/bemused looks. But in my books there is definitely nothing wrong with wearing every colour at once... besides, with Britain's current offering of sunshine, people really need an excuse to wear sunglasses!

If anyone else is heading to Brighton, I'd definitely recommend a trip to Beyond Retro. Housed in a giant warehouse, they had so many clothes that I hardly knew where to begin! Luckily everything was arranged by garment type, as specific as 'Dresses with Collars' and 'High Neck Dresses', making the vintage finding mission much easier.

A quick stroll through North Laine will reveal plenty of other vintage clothing shops, including one of my favourites 'To Be Worn Again', 'Dirty Harry's' and the very popular 'Snooper's Paradise' which seems to sell every object imaginable (rubber ducks, old garden tools, retro furniture, plastic crocodiles...). There are plenty of other great shops but I can't quite remember the names!

What do you think of the dress?

Love the dress, I like the collar with your glasses, proper librarian chic!
I have got this real hankering to go to Brighton, people keep talking about it and I have a real soft spot for the seaside.
Ooh, good luck for tomorrow! Ah, Paris, another place I really want to go...

A very lively/psychedelic combo to match the charged up anticipation about your adventure over the channel!

The gear is striking, but residents getting "bemused"? Tsk, people do get ruffled easily in some places! Imagine if they saw some of the most flamboyant/risque outfits paraded around in Brighton in broad daylight....outraged gaping and gasping, followed by fainting may well ensue :/

'Dirty Harry's' would sound a bit wrong if someone wasn't aware of those vintage cop flicks! Like a place where some kind of unmentionables I have no idea about might be sold :O

This fella got lucky in a secondhand shop too. Remarkable prize!!

So, clearly all sorts of good reasons to do things on the cheap (but with wise judgment, obviously!).

You'll be WELL on the way to your new base in Paris by now....Bon voyage miss, and best of luck in your mission! I feel a touch of vicarious excitement :)

PS Gah, a bit hurried here, so I missed the 'new' bit (hence remark about s/h stuff). Thought the dress looked suspiciously gleaming for s/h, haha :)

No no, it's 'new' to me - it is actually second hand though!

Ah, the mist clears! Thought in that context 'vintage' might refer to a brand new item based on a pattern from 'olde tymes', y'see.

Btw, looking back at what I hastily scribbled before *might* give the impression I'm the 73 year old bloke who sniffed out the £350,000 bag in Kingston's Oxfam. Lol, no. Thought I'd set that straight, just in case "Please buy me a pony for my birthday, Mister!"-type appeals start surfacing from randoms in here :)

You are so adorable! Love the dress and your glasses. You're moving to Paris?! Amazing, I lived there on my year abroad last year - for vintage go to Le Marais, it's also the Jewish quarter so there's the most amazing falafel and pastries to sample in between shops :)
